Biography

William James Abernethy (1888-1943) was born on the 4th November 1888 in the Toxteth Park district of Liverpool. He was the son of William Abernethy & Elizabeth Clare. ^[1]

As a child he lived on Longfellow Street, Toxteth Park ^[2] before the family moved to Asbridge Street. ^[3] When he left school he was employed as a labourer in a paper warehouse and in 1911 his family lived on Cullen Street. ^[4]

In the summer of that year he married at West Derby register office to Edith Baguley, who was expecting their first child ^[5] and when their son Harry was christened in December 1911, the couple were living with Edith's family on Lydiate Street, Toxteth Park. ^[6]

They moved to Liffey Street, Toxteth Park before 1914 when their second child was christened and they stayed there through WW1 up to about 1936. 6 children (including 2 sets of twins) were born there between 1916 and 1926 but sadly only 1 of those would survive infancy. ^[7]

During WW1 William served with the Grenadier Guards ^[8] and one of his daughters had been named Muriel Grenadier. ^[9]

Probably around 1937/8 they moved to Huyton, Lancashire and at the start of WW2, he and Edith were living at Crosswood Crescent there. ^[10] and they still lived there when William died in June 1943. ^[11]

He was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery on the 28th June 1943. ^[12]
