As early as 1283, Osbert or Osbern d'Abitot is shown possessing much of the land in Croome d'Abitot. He is also described as "Lord of Croome", whence the place was sometimes called "CROOME OSBERN". From him the property and all the manorial rights were transmitted, in regular succession, to the last of his male heirs, William D'Abitot, who died towards the end of the reign of Henry VI*. By the marriage of his daughters, of whom there were several, the estate, being divided into separate shares, passed from his family into those of Verney, Rice, Child, and Townley.[1]
