This enslaved ancestor's profile has a preliminary Last Name At Birth (LNAB) until a surname can be determined. Please see the US Black Heritage Naming Conventions for Slaves before merging or changing the LNAB.
Ezekial was an enslaved person in Augusta county, Virginia. He is mentioned in the will of William Abney in 1828 as bequeathed to his daughter Lettitia. In the will, Ezekial was described as Ezekial, a boy, "now in possession of Bird S. Grils". Bird S Grils was William's grandson (the son of William's daughter Isabella).
Last name at birth is the name of his two known slave holders. Grils/Grills is added as an additional name based on the information above. Lettitia Abney possible married a man named Swink so this may be another last name of interest.
This profile previously referenced Abney's will as transcribed in "Abney Metzger, C. A. 1978 In search of Kate, Abney, Geisinger, Davis, Parks, McClanahan, Shelton, Van Lear families" with a link that no longer works at http://labs.libhub.org/dallaspl/resource/kbfnT8Iy/. FamilySearch seems to have a copy of this book, but as of 8 Sep 2023, it was not available online due to copyright restrictions.
