Biography

William Abraham was born about 2 October 1744 and was baptised on 22 November 1744 at Chew Magna, Somerset[1]. He was the son of Thomas Abraham and Sara Webb.

He went on to become a Banker.

At the age of about 52 he married Bridget Bowles (daughter of Edward Bowles and Bridget Downing) on about 27 July 1796 at St Michaels, Bristol, Gloucester, England, by Licence[2]. Edward Bowles was the Minister. The witnesses were Edward Bowles and Sarah Salmon.

Sadly his wife Bridget died in 1798, soon after the birth of their only daughter Bridget.

Now aged about 55, he married, secondly, Elizabeth Salmon on 7 May 1799 at St Nicholas, Bristol, Gloucester, England, by Licence[3]. The witnesses were Sarah Salmon, Sarah Salmon and Thomas Salmon.

Notice of their marriage was printed on page 3 of the Oxford Journal dated 18 May 1799:

At Briftol, William Abraham, Efq. Banker, of Bath, to Mifs Elisabeth Salmon, fecond daughter and co-heirefs of the late Robert Salmon, Efq. of Queen Square, Briftol.[4]

They had about three children (two of whom died young).

His last Will and Testament was dated 9 December (?) 1803. He was of the parish of Bathwick (part of it in the city of Bath and the other part in the county of Somerset). In it he makes provision for his wife Elizabeth, his son William Abraham, his daughter Bridget Bowles Abraham, his nephew Thomas Abraham Salmon, his nieces Sarah and Frances Salmon, and the sons and daughters of John and Hester Salmon of Wells, Somerset. He appointed Richard Attwood, Charles Bowles, Reverend John Ball and his wife Elizabeth as his Trustees.
