When James H. Abrams was born in 1844 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the sixth child of William H Abrams (1810-1848) and Mary Ann Murry (1814-1903).

Year: 1860 census finds James (16 years old) living with his mother Mary Ann Murry, who is head of household in Brooklyn Ward 10 . Other members of the household are his siblings (Lewis, Thomas, Eliza, and William) and a boarder, Elizabeth Jackson 23 years old.
Year: 1864; James volunteered to serve in the Civil War. He served as a member of the 26th Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops, 1864-1867 with a rank of private.

The Regiment reported at Beaufort, S. C., April 13, 1864, and post duty there till November 27. Expedition to Johns and James Islands July 2-10. Operations against Battery Pringle July 4-9. Actions on Johns Island July 5 and 7. Burden's Causeway July 9. Battle of Honey Hill November 30. Demonstration on Charleston & Savannah Railroad December 6-9. Action at Devaux's Neck December 6. Tillifinny Station December 9. McKay's Point December 22. Ordered to Beaufort, S. C., January 2, 1865.
Year: 1870 census reports that James occupation was a Coachman. In today's terms, he was a New York City Cab Driver, "a hack", or a Uber Driver. Except in 1870 the tool was a horse-drawn carriage, and the hustle was the same. In 1870 vernacular people who worked this occupation was called a "whip" or a coachee.
In the 1880 census, Walter Abram (age 10) is listed as a son of James. No information found yet about Walter's mother. He may be a nephew to James.
Year: c. 1874 James married Victorine Undley. They had at least four children.
Year: 1891 He married Amelia Rollins on January 12, 1891, in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.
