By the time William was born in 1849 in Brooklyn, New York his father had passed away at the age of 38 on September 30, 1848 and his mother was 35. William Abrams and Mary Ann Murry

The 1850 census finds William 1 year old living in the household of Stephen Murry the head. His mother Mary Ann Murry and seven (7) children were living in Brooklyn's 9th ward. The head of household is William's Grandfather, Stephen Murry (abt.1788-1876) a boarder Amanda M Johnson Age 21 was also a member of the household.

In 1860, 11 year old William living in the Brooklyn Ward 10 District 1, Kings, New York in the household of his mother Mary Ann and 5 siblings, with a boarder, Elizabeth Jackson, Age23 a domestic. William was attending school.


Military Service

Year: 1864 At 15 years old William volunteered to serve in the USCT. He enlisted in the United States Navy with the rank of Colored Landsman. He served on the USS Pursuit mustering out in 1867.

The USS Pursuit was a bark purchased at New York City on 3 September 1861; and was commissioned 17 December 1861, Acting Volunteer Lt. David Cate in command.

The USS Pursuit was assigned to the Gulf blockade. Assigned to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron, she operated off the Florida coast, with several cruises to Cuba, during the course of the American Civil War.

Intercepting and capturing blockade runners Operating as named. She captured her first prize, the schooner Anna Belle, off Apalachicola, Florida 6 March 1862. In April she took the sloop La Fayette (4th) and the steamer Florida (6th), both in St. Joseph's Bay near Pensacola, Florida, and on 28 May she ran down the schooner Andromeda off the Cuban coast. On 23 June 1863 she captured the sloop Kate at the mouth of the Indian River and, at the end of December, destroyed two salt works on St. Joseph's Bay. Final Indian River operations Pursuit took her final prizes, the cotton boat Peep O'Day and the British schooner Mary, in the Indian River, 4 December 1864 and 16 March 1865 respectively.


Occupation and Life

1870 census reports that Williams occupation was a Coachman, like his brother James. In today's terms, he was a New York City Cab Driver, "a hack", or a Uber Driver. Except in 1870 the tool was a horse-drawn carriage, but the hustle is the same. In 1870 vernacular, people who worked this occupation was called a "whip" or a coachee.

William is 25 years old in the 1875 census, living and working as a servant at the Hotel Gravesend, in Brooklyn New York. Among the 20 people listed, a young woman by the name of Annie Abrams 23 years old is also a servant living and working there. It is possible she could be his wife.


Death of William Abrams jr.

Year: 1910; William passed away December 4, 1910, the result of an accident at 60 years old. He is buried in The Green-Wood Cemetery Brooklyn, Kings, New York.
