Biography

Eva Magdalena Abt was born on 20 Jan 1794 in Saxony.

She was the daughter of the royal Prussian chief forester in Schleusingen. Since Schleusingen became part of Prussia only in 1815, when Saxony had to give up some territories after the Napoleonic wars, it is not clear if she was born in or near Schleusingen, of if her father came here only after he got the office.

She married 9 May 1816 in Oelze Johann Daniel Christian Leibe, a local smith (Hammerschmied) from Tellerhammer. The entry reads:

[1816] 4: On 9 May 1816 got married the bachelor Johann Daniel Christian Leibe, honorable inhabitant and smith (Hammergewerke) in Tellerhammer, 2nd legitimate son of Johann Peter Leibe, honorable inhabitant and smith in Masser-, Schwäger- and Tellerhammer, born 2 May 1792, according to his testimony; and the maiden Eva Magdalene Apt, second youngest daughter of the royal Prussian chief forester (Oberförster) of Schleusinger Neuendorff Johann Valentin Apt. The wedding took place after 3 proclamations in Teller- and Masserhammer, as well as in Schleusinger Neuendorff, in the church in Oelze with a matrimonial sermon. [1]

Emigration to America

For more details about her family and the emigration to America in 1842, see her husband's profile.

Eve died of severe burns from a kerosene lamp explosion at home on 3 Dec 1868 at the age of 74 at 113 West Street in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. Eva Magdalena Leibe was the mother of Adeline Nathalie Sidonie Leibe, the wife of Philip Sommer, the Deputy mentioned in the obituary. (Eva was Philip's mother-in-law.) ANOTHER shocking kerosene accident took place on Wednesday night, by which an elderly woman named Leipe, the wife of Daniel Leipe, of No. 113 West street, was injured so severely that she died about midnight. It appears the old couple -- Mr. Leipe is about eighty-five years of age and his wife was some years younger -- were sitting at a table, he reading and she dozing, when some sudden movement upset the lamp. An explosion was the result, and in striving to extinguish the flames with her garments the old lady was soon enveloped in flames, and before aid was rendered her they were entirely consumed from her body and she burned shockingly, so that her death resulted a few hours subsequently. Her aged husband became confused, and instead of using a pail of water which was at hand, he went down stairs, and in doing so stumbled and fell, sustaining severe injury himself. The County Hhysician [sic] had not been notified up to yesterday. Neither had the police. An inquest will probably be held to-day, however. The unfortunate woman was the mother of Deputy Sheriff Sommers. She was buried at Fairmount Cemetery, Section F, Lot #17, Grave #1 in Newark, Essex, New Jersey. Maiden name appears in marriage record.
