Harvey was born in 1931. He passed away in 2022.
Born on Aug. 8, 1931, in Greely, Colorado, he was a son of the late John and Marie Thiel Achziger. Mr. Achziger served in the U.S. Air Force. He and his family have owned and operated McLean Marine Inc. in Sumter for more than 68 years. He entered Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) in 1949 to play football and earn a degree in agriculture. He earned all-conference honors in 1951 and 1952 and was named to the International News All-America team as a first-team tackle in 1952. He also competed on the track team while at Colorado A&M, helping the team to the 1952 and 1953 conference championships. He was named to the Colorado State All-Century Team in 1992 and inducted into the Colorado State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played professionally in the Canadian Football League for the Hamilton Tiger Cats before a knee injury ended his career.
He is survived by two children, Mary Katherine "Kaye" Achziger and Harvey Walter Achziger Jr. (Tammy); and one granddaughter, McLean Marie Achziger, all of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, John Achziger, Theodore Achziger, Clarence Achziger and Roland Achziger; and four sisters, Emma Brungard, Helen Landers, Esther Bauer Orr and Florine Marie Meeker.
