Biography

Henry Philip Acker was the son of Philip Herman Acker (1808-1862) and Christina Barbara Goedelman (abt.1820-) [1] [2] [3] {See Research Note #1}

He was born about 16 Aug 1849 in Bavaria, Germany. [3][4] [5] [6] {See Research Note #1}

Henry immigrated to the US in 1854 and became a naturalized citizen probably prior to 1870. [7] {See Research Note #2}

Henry was living in his father Herman Phillip Acker's household in Township 5 South Range 8 West, Randolph County, Illinois in 1860. [1]
"Philip H." was a 52 year old cooper. He owned $200 worth of real estate and $140 worth of personal property
Also in the home were "Barbary" 41 years old; 15 year old "Nicholas"; 11 year old Henry; and 4 month old "Reka" {Frederika).
All were born in Germany except Reka, who had been born in Illinois.

Henry and Catharina (Rosche) Acker (1849-1879) were issued a marriage license on 2 Dec 1868 by the County Clerk of Monroe County, Illinois. They were married 2 days later, on 4 Dec 1868 in Monroe County, Illinois. The wedding was performed by Pastor Theodore Horn. [8]
Their children included

As William's birth record indicates he was the 5th child born to this mother, and since she died soon after his birth, presumably there were no other children born to this marriage.

By June 1870, Henry had established his own household in Township 3 South Range 8 West *, Monroe County, Illinois. He was a Bavarian-born 21 year old farmer, owning $200 worth of real property; he claimed to be a citizen.
His household also included his wife Catharine (nee Rosche), an Illinois-born 20 year old woman that was keeping house for her husband and daughter Christine Acker. Christine was a year old.
* T3S-R8W is the plat designation of most of Prairie Du Long Township.

Prairie Du Long Township in Monroe County, Illinois was named after the prairie and creek by the same name. The French name is obvious, and most likely dates back to the very early 1700's, when the French controlled the area along the Kaskaskia River. The remains of some of the old forts in the nearby area can still be seen, such as Fort Kaskaskia (established 1733) and Fort de Chartres (established 1720). Both of these are now protected historic sites. Fort de Chartres has been completely rebuilt, and hosts several spectacular historic festivals every year.
(I have been to both of these several times, and attended a couple of the festivals. No photos, though. Ooops! Johnson-66920 17:05, 28 April 2021 (UTC) )
Prairie Du Long Creek, with headwaters just to the north in neighboring St. Clair County, is about 9 miles long. [15] It is a major tributary of Richland Creek, whitch it joins about a mile west of the Richland's confluence with the Kaskaskia, a major river that still carries a great deal of cargo traffic (although not nearly as much as in the past).

1951 Plat Map of Prairie du Long Township, Monroe County, Illinois

In June 1880, Henry and his family were living on their farm in Prairie Du Long Township. [10] Henry Acker was 31 years old and widowed - Catharine had died the year before . He was a farmer. His 61 year old widowed mother Christina Rosche was now living with him, and keeping house for the family.
Of his 5 children born to Catherine, daughter Christina had died in 1874 at age 5, and son William had died in 1879 before he was 2 months old. The 3 remaining were his daughter Caroline, 9, and sons Philip, 6, and Henry, 4. All 3 were living at home and attending school.
There was also an apparently unrelated teenager, Louis Niemand, 16, boarding with the family and working as a farm laborer.

Henry and Susanna (Jatho) Acker (1863-1950) were issued a marriage license on 18 Oct 1881 by the County Clerk of Monroe County, Illinois. They were married on 27 Oct 1881 in Freeburg, St. Clair County, Illinois. The wedding was performed by Pastor Theodore Horn. [5][16][17] in Monroe County, Illinois [2].
Their children included

Per the 1900 census, there was at least one other child that was born and died prior to the census date. At this time, nothing is known about this 3rd child.

In June 1900, Henry and his family were living on their farm in Prairie Du Long Township. [12]
Henry Acker was 50 years old. He and his wife Susan had been married for 19 years. Henry was born in Germany to German-born parents. Henry immigrated to the States in 1854, and was a naturalized citizen. Henry was a farmer; he owned his farm but did have a mortgage against it.
His wife, Susan (nee Jatho) was 36 years old. She was the mother of 3 children, but only 2 of them were still living.
Philip, Jacob's son from his first wife, was living with them. He was 26, still single, and was working as a farm laborer, probably on his father's farm.
Susan's 2 children, 16 year old George and 14 year old Emily were also in the home. George was working as a farm laborer, probably on his father's farm. Susan was attending school.

In April 1910, Henry and his family were living on their farm in Prairie Du Long Township. [17]
Henry P Acker was 60 years old. He had been married 2 times, and had been in the current marriage for 29 years. He was farming his own farm, which was now free of mortgage.
His wife Susan was 46 years old. She was the mother of 3 children, but only 2 of them were still living Both were single and living at home. Son George was 26, working as a farm laborer, probably on his father's farm. Daughter Emily was 24, working as a servant for private family, probably at home.

In January 1920, Henry and Susanna were still on the farm in Prairie Du Long Township. [18]
Henry, age 70, owned his farm free of mortgage, and was farming it as a truck farm. Susanna was age 56.
Also living with them was Henry's grandson Edgar Acker, the son of Henry and Catherine's son Henry William. Edgar was age 13 and attending school.

In April 1930, Henry and Susanna were still on the farm in Prairie Du Long Township. [14]
Henry owns their home farm, and now owns a radio. He is 80 years old. He had first married at age 25. He was still farming, and was not a military veteran. His wife Susanna was 66 years old and first married at age 20.
Henry's son by his first wife, Henry William Acker, was back living at home. He was 53 years old, a widower that had first married at age 27. Henry W. had served in the military, and was now working as a carpenter doing odd jobs.

Henry died at the age of 84 on 4 Jan 1934 in Monroe County, Illinois [3].
He was buried on 7 Jan 1934 in Immanuel Cemetery in Monroe County, Illinois. [3] {See Research Note #5}

Research Notes

1. Birth and Parentage

  • Birth
    • Henry's DOB of 16 Aug 1849 is attested to by by his death record [3], and almost exact in his son William's birth record. [4]
      It is also calculatable from son George's birth record. [4]
      The various census records all give his age, which invariably matches up with 1849. {See Research Note # below
    • Alternative birth information: about 20 Jul 1849, calculating backward from his age of 29 yr 6 mo 5 dy from his son William's DOB of 25 Jan 1879. [4].
    • Also, William's birth record states Henry's nationality was German, born in Etenkomen. I could find nothing about this location in Germany, although there is a town with a similar name in Netherlands. Johnson-66920 17:36, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Parentage
    • Henry's relationship as a son of Philip Herman Acker and Christina Goedelman is implied by his inclusion in Philip's household in 1860. [1] It is stated explicitly in the marriage record of Henry to Catherine Rosche [2], and in his 1934 death record. [3]
