John was a large man (300+ lbs). As sheriff of Antrim County, MI, he did a lot of travelling. This incident was reported in the Elk Rapids Progress: 4 Jun 1886 "The water in the bay rose over a foot Monday evening. Mr. Acker, who weighs over 300, fell overboard just as the "Cummings" reached the dock. It took five men to rescue him."
11 Jun 1886 "It made John Acker huffy because we published last week the item in regard to his falling into the bay, and he stopped his paper. We said the water in the bay raised a foot. It only raised 4 inches. Mr. Acker isn't as big a man, by 8 inches, as we thought."
