Biography

Gerrid J. Ackerman married Rachel Van Voorhess prior to 1766 when the first of their seven children were born, two of whom died young: Johannis (DY), Jannetje, Johannes G, Jacobus G. (DY), Elizabeth, Jacobus G., and William G.

An interesting side fact is that Gerrid J. Ackerman and his brothers, William and Johannes, each married a Van Voorhess sister.

Gerrid and Rachel are recorded in the list of 1 May 1799 as members during the Revolution at Paramus Reformed Church. From there they moved further north a few miles to Hemstead, Rockland Co, New York, where Gerrid J. died 3 Nov 1808. His will recorded at New City, New York, refers to "beloved wife Rachel" and to sons John G., William G., and James G. (Jacobus is Dutch for James), and daughters Jennie (Jannetje) and Betsy (Elizabeth).

In July 1812, Rachel Van Vorhess, widow of Garret, was a member at Saddle River Reformed Church, New Jersey. We (HILL) are descendants of Jacobus G. Ackerman born 23 Nov 1778 and baptized 1 Jan 1779 at Schralenburg (Bergenfield, New Jersey). A5 Jacobus G. Ackerman married Lea Hopper and they had three children: Rachel, born 13 Jan 1799, who died young in 1801, Garret, born 11 Mar 1800, and Hendrick, born 17 Mar 1801. We (HILL) are descendants of Garret Ackerman born 11 Mar 1800. Lea Hopper's father was Hendrick J Hopper, who was a private in the Revolutionary War [1]

A6 Garret J. Ackerman married Jane E. Ackerman of Kakeath (Ramapo), New York on 26 Oct 1822 at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kakeath, now called "The Brick Church" and the area is now called West Hempstead, at Spring Valley, New York.

Garret J. and Jane E. had five children: James G., born 15 Nov 1825, John, born 18 Sept 1828, Peter, born 9 Apr 1837, Leah Jane, born ? 1840, who died at age 12, Elizabeth, born 9 Sept 1828, as calculated from her grave stone. She was probably a twin of John. Garret J and wife Jane Ackerman are buried at Union Cemetery, Darlington Road, Ramsey, New Jersey, as is their son John.[2]
