Biography

Thomas was born in 1802 in Cottingham near Hull. [1] He was the son of Richard Acklom from Bewholme and his wife Mary Morrod.

Cottingham was not truly a rural or even a suburban parish in the early 19th century, though the village itself was still rural and surrounded by market gardens. The parish spread much closer to industrial Hull than it does today, as far as Stepney, Springhead, Willerby Road, Newland, Inglemire and Hull Bank with a growing population of urban poor on these boundaries ignored and denied by the village proper.

Move to Barnsley

Thomas moved to Barnsley to work as a linen hand loom weaver.

Marriage 1825 Silkstone, Barnsley

Thomas Acklam married Elizabeth Brookes in the Barnsley area 1825. They had three children in Barnsley with baptisms widely spaced: George 1826, Mary 1838 and Charles 1844. [2]

A Chartist Activist

Thomas Acklam, one of the Barnsley Manifesto's signatories, left Barnsley for the Chartist settlement of Lowbands in a great fanfare; it was reported by the Barnsley Chronicle. Like the vast majority of allottees he did not last long, and was reported to have argued with Fergus O'Connor. Thomas Acklam was back in Barnsley by the time of the 1851 census. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Land_Company

Thomas Acklam appears to have been imprisoned for his Chartist activities (and may according to some reports have been transported to Tasmania but either the sentence was never carried out or somehow he got back).

Publican and Developer

Thomas seems to have prospered for a time as a publican and built a small terrace Acklam Row in Barnsley.

Death 1876 Barnsley

Nevertheless at the time of his death in Barnsley in 1876 Thomas was a poor man. [3]
