I am the mother of 2, grandmother of 3 and began researching our family connections on the request of my younger daughter after the death of my father. I wish I had started sooner as so much valuable information passed with him.
Initially it was just all names and dates for me, then idle curiosity led me to start looking at photos and information others had shared and on seeing a photo of my 3rd Great Grandmother for the first time ever I connected on a much deeper more personal and emotional level to the project I had undertaken.
Although I was born and raised in Stawell (Australia), my parents were both born down the road in Ballarat, and I have often felt "pulled" there, it being my second home so to speak, and I have returned there to live. So I guess I should not have been surprised to learn that my roots here go back 5 to 6 generations, and we now have 2 more generations living here as well.
I have also found many inconsistencies in family trees I have reviewed, and would like to create an accurate account of my ancestors, with as much supporting documentation as I can find, and share the precious photos, documents and memories of my family.
I have taken a particular interest in where people lived, what they did for a living and where they were laid to rest.
For example I know my 3rd Great Grandfather migrated to the Goldfields, was in the Eureka Stockade at the time of the Rebellion; having struck it rich finding one of the larger nuggets listed in the goldfields records built a "Villa" on a substantial plot of land in Ballarat before moving to Bendigo for some time and was living in Melbourne at the time of his death.
I have also found the newspaper notice of his body being transported by train from Spencer St station to Ballarat for interment, so was very surprised to learn that there is no monument of ANY description marking his resting place, which is a family plot in which his wife, his eldest daughter and her husband and several other family members are interred. This has led me to be curious about the resting place of others and the stories that lie buried with them.
While I have at least 15 surnames I am now researching, my primary focus is currently on Ackroyd, Greenwood, Oborne and Bridges. I am seeking to build an accurate record back 4 generations to begin with and to make contact with as many living descendants of those ancestors as I can to get personal stories that may have been passed down in the family.
