William was born in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on December 27, 1897. [1] He was the son of Samuel Ackroyd and Mary Hunsworth. He was baptized on February 6, 1898, in Halifax, at St Augustine.[2] He was enumerated in the 1901 census [3] as a three year old residing with his parents and two siblings at 326 Queens Road, Halifax. Maternal grandmother Martha Jane Hunsworth amd aunt Harriet Hunsworth also at residence. In 1911, [4] the family was still living on Queens Road but had moved to number 232. William was one of six children, ages twenty two to two, at residence. He stated he was thirteen and a "Worsted Bobbin Getter" (and school). Maternal grandmother Martha Jane Hunsworth still with family.

William enlisted in the British Army to serve in World war I on February 24, 1916. [5] He was a Private in the The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) Regimental Number 42926. He was killed in action on August 23, 1918 in France and Flanders. His personal effects were authorized for release to his father Samuel on August 23, 1919.[6] He was buried at Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery and Memorial Haucourt, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
