Thomas was born in Huddersfield, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on January 7, 1872.[1] He was the son of Joseph Ackroyd and Frances Wood. He was baptized on June 23, 1872, in King Cross (Halifax), at St Paul.[2] According to the Parish Register [3] his parents were Joseph and Frances Ellen residing in Huddersfield. His father's occupation "Painter". He was enumerated in the 1881 census [4] as a nine year old residing with his parents and four siblings at 81 Hanson Lane, Halifax. Paternal grand father Thomas Ackroyd, widower and "Mason" also at residence as well as five year old visitor Clina Murgatroyd. Thomas appears in the 1891 census [5] residing at 326 Queens Road, Halifax, with his parents and three siblings. He stated he was nineteen, single, and a "Painter". (Note...Family Search record is mis-transcribed noting his age as ten).
Thomas married Jane Hannah Greenwood in 1893.[6] The ceremony was held on June 22nd in Halifax at St Augustine. According to the Parish Register, [7] Thomas was a twenty one year old bachelor and "Painter" residing at Queens Road, Halifax. His father was named as Joseph Ackroyd "Painter". Jane was a nineteen year old spinster residing in Luddenfoot ( a community in Calderdale), Her father was named as James Greenwood "Overlooker". The witnesses were James Greenwood and Sarah Hannah Ackroyd. The couple would have two children. (In the 1911 census , Jane stated she had two children but one had died). Thomas, Jane, and three year old daughter Ivy were enumerated in the 1901 census [8] residing at 39 Sutcliffe Street, Northowram (village in Calderdale east of Halifax). His occupation "Painter and Paperhanger". The family was living at 2 Churn Lane, Highroyd Well, Halifax in 1911.[9] Thomas was a "House Painter" for the Borough Town Council.
Thomas and Jane appear in the 1939 Register [10] residing at 597 Well Royd Crescent, Halifax. Thomas' occupation "Painter Retired". Daughter Ivy and her husband Cecil F. Tatham also at residence. Thomas passed away on August 8, 1940.[11] His Probate, dated October 18, 1940, in Wakefield, [12] named his beneficiary as widow Jane Hannah. Thomas was sixty eight.
He passed away in 1940.
