SIr Henry Wentworth Acland KCB, KCR (Brazil), MD, MA, LLD, DCL, FRS, was the fourth son of Sir Thomas Dyke Acland and his wife Lydia.[1] He was born on 23 August 1815[2] and baptised 15 September 1815 at Broad Clyst, Devon. He was not given the name Dyke at birth[3][4], but he felt it was an important enough feature of his ancestry to pass the name on to most of his children.[5]
Sir Henry married Sarah, eldest daughter of WIlliam Cotton DCL, on 14 July 1846[6] in Leytonstone, Essex. She died in 1878.[1]
Educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford, he was elected Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford in 1840, and then studied medicine in London and Edinburgh. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1847. He was Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1858 and the honorary physician to the Prince of Wales from 1862. In 1890 he was said to be living at Oxford and was a member of the Athenaeum Club.[1]
Acland was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1883 and was promoted to a Knight Commander (KCB) in 1884. Already the son of a baronet, in 1890 he was created 1st Baronet Acland of St Mary Magdalene, in the county of Oxfordshire (in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom) in his own right.
Sir Henry died in October 1900[7][8] and was buried St Cross, Holywell, Oxford[9]. A memorial tablet was placed in what is now the Military Chapel at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford[10]. Probate to his estate was granted on 21 December 1900 to WIlliam Alison Dyke Acland, Henry Dyke Acland and Reginald Brodie Dyke Acland.[11]
