'"By early spring 1840 more Euro-American pioneers had arrived to settle Minnesota Territory which two years later would become Iowa Territory (present Fremont County, Iowa). Among them were John and Cynthia Acord, son John, age one, and John's grandmother Rachel Combs Acord, age sixty-nine years. Rachel, born 1 January 1768 was the daughter of Job and Deborah Combs of Powels Fort Valley, Shenandoah County, Virginia. She had been reared with brothers Zur Job, John, and sisters Lacey and Deborah. On 12 August 1788 she married John Eckert Acord who was the son of a Pennsylvania Dutch family.

Note that the Halsey source gives John Acord Sr birth date as about 1767 in Lancaster County, PA; while Find-a-Grave gives the birthplace as Heidelberg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA in 1768. There is also confusion about the death date: given by Handy as 1835; by Halsey as circa 1856 at age 90; and by Find-a-Grave as 1835 Note also the confusion between death location, from Decatur Township, Lawrence County, IN (Halsey) to Decatur Township, Lawrence County, OH (Handy) to Sidney Township, Fremont, IA (also Halsey) and in Ohio according to Fnd-a-grave. Find-a-Grave also lists different parents.

Hi Betty,

Yes, it appears descendants are confusing two different men. John Acord and Johannes/John Eckert. This John Acord moved with his family to VA in the 1770s and died in Lawrence, Ohio before 1840. The other Johannes/John Eckert lived and died in PA in 1857 but unfortunately descendants frequently confuse the two and start attaching/merging records before doing research.

The father's "confirmed with DNA" indicator was removed because the DNA confirmation is undocumented.

Please see this G2G article on DNA confirmation for more information.

Thank you.
