Biography

William Acree was born between 1750 and 1760 in Hanover County, Virginia. Between 1795 and 1800, he moved south and settled in Spartanburg District, South Carolina. On 10 September 1803, he bought an 80-acre tract of land on the west side of the Tyger River in Spartanburg District. [1] On 11 January 1809, William Acree of Spartanburg District, South Carolina paid $100 for a 34-acre tract of land, [2] and the following day, on January 12th, Acree paid $65 for an additional 60 acres. Both tracts of land lay on the west side of Ward's Creek, a tributary of the Tyger River. William's teenaged son, Burton, witnessed both of these transactions. [3]

William Acree and his family lived there until July 1813, when he sold his lands and property to his children, Burton, Bevery Dandridge, and Peggy Acree. [4]

By about 1815, William Acree and his family had moved west and settled in Rutherford County, Tennessee. On 26 July 1818, William Acree gave property to his son, Dandridge:

"Be it known to all whom these Presents may concern that I William Acree of the County of Rutherford and State of Tennessee for & in Consideration of the Love good will & affection which I have for my Son Dandridge Acree of the County and State above mentioned have given & granted & by these presents do freely give & grant unto the Said Dandridge Acree his Heirs and assigns a negro boy named Amos between five & Six Years of age Likewise one negro Girl named Alce between three & four years of age, one Cow & Calf, Two feather beds & Furniture, one Tabale and one Chest. I have Delivered [to] him to the said Dandridge ACree the above mentioned property to have & to hold all the said property his heirs or assigns forever as his property to have and to hold from the day of my Death and my wife's Death..." [5]

William Acree appears to have died sometime between 1818 and 1820.
