Biography

Retha Jane Acree Martin from from Katheryn Curtis Trogden, The History of Stephens County, Georgia: The Toccoa Woman's Club, Inc.: Toccoa, Georgia (1973) Library of Congress 72-82734, pages 242, 346:

"Retha Jane Acree m. Zack Martin [See Martin Family History]. Retha taught in the rural schools of Stephens and Franklin Co. before her marriage. She is a member of the First Methodist Church of Toccoa and the WSCS. She is an amateur genealogist and has served as the Registrar of the Toccoa Chapter of DAR for many years. She helped organize Green Thumb Garden Club and was its first president. She was instrumental in planning the city park at the intersection of E. Tugaloo and N. Big A Rd. She gave hundreds of azaleas for the park in memory of her son Sgt. Clyde Martin who was killed in World War II.

The children of Zack and Retha Martin were: 1. Wallace Ford, 2. Daniel Allen, 3. Clyde Sidney, 4. Fay.

Toccoa, GA -- Mrs. Retha Acree Martin, 83, of 136 Rosedale, Toccoa, died in a local hospital late Tuesday night after an extended illness.

She was born in Stephens County, a daughter of the late James Knox and Nancy Banks Acree. She taught in the rural schools of Stephens and Franklin counties for a number of years. She was a member of the first United Methodist church in Toccoa and the WSCS of the church. She was a geneaologist and had served as registrar of the Toccoa Chapter of the DAR, help organized the Green Thumb Garden Club and was its first president. She was instrumental in planning the city park in Toccoa. Her husband, the late Zack Martin, died in 1955.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert W. Graves Jr. of Toccoa; two sons, Wallace F. Martin of Toccoa and Dr. Dan A. Martin of Lawrenceville; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Hayes of College Park and Mrs. Noah Thomason of Canton; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home by the Revs. Henry Walker and Dean Head. Burial will be in Toccoa City Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers; Dr. Dan C. Martin, Wallace Martin, Zack Martin, Tony Martin, Andy Martin and Robert W. Graves III. Honorary escort will be members of the Toiccoa Chapter of the DAR.[1]
