William Acutt migrated from England to Natal, South Africa.
Biography
William was born in 1821. He is the son of Robert Acutt and Julianna Cotton . [1]
His father died in 1849.
William was the first Acutt to move to Natal SA.
On 9 January 1850 William emigrated to South Africa, leaving from Gravesend on the Thames on the 680 ton barque Edward under Captain Robertson and arriving 4 months later on 10 May 1850 in Port Natal (Durban). Also on the same ship were the Groom family: Groom, Richard (25), his wife Elizabeth (20), Betsy (27), Ellen (23), Thomas (21), Mary (19), Edward (10). They travelled under the Joseph Byrne scheme, and are still known as the "Byrne Settlers"
William had been allotted 50 acres in Natal.
He married Agnes Mary Williams on 5 August 1853 at D'Urban, Natal, South Africa. His occupation was recorded as Merchant.[2]
They went on to have 10 children.
His wife Agnes died in 1881.
He married, secondly, Mary Caroline Gower.
