Biography

Richard Acworth was born[1] [2]on 15 May 1666 in Manoakin, Somerset, Maryland. He was the son of Richard A Acworth and Anne Williams.

Richard's father, Richard A Acworth, was a Planter of Manaokin (1 April 1666). He had a registered cattle mark on 14 August 1666.

Richard receives land from his father Richard A Acworth in his will[3] in 1676. He is left 600 acres of land next to the Manaokin River. The land was fertile and well served by the Bay and numerous inland waterways as transportation lanes, and sparsely populated by relatively peaceful indians.

Richard married[4] Sarah Hardy at Nanticoke, Kent, Delaware on 6 Dec 1683. They were both from the same county and were married[5] by Mr Hewett Cler? at Nanticoke.

They had a daughter[6] born 3 November 1684 in Nanticoke (noted in the same citation) and sons Richard, Charles and Thomas. These three sons are named in Richard's will (see below) and would be younger than the daughter who was born the year after the marriage.

Richard registered cattle marks in 1695[7]

Richard registered land[8] in Somerset County: in 1704 (400 acres called Ackworth's Delight); 100 acres at Marshy Hope in 1716 and 18 acres at Cypruss in 1729.

Death and Will

Richard died in 1728 and he left a will[9] listed in the "Maryland, U.S., Calendar of Wills, 1635-1743". The text of the Will is reported as follows:

To sons Charles and Thomas, exs., 500 A. “Acworth's Delight,” 200 A. “Hog Quarter,” 100 A. “Acworth's Choice,” sd. tracts being on south side of Baren Ck., and 18 A. “Syprus Swamp,” on Gravely Br.

To son Richard and hrs., 100 A. “Chance,” s. side Baran Creek.; sd. land not to be sold without consent of 2 bros. afsd. To 3 sons afsd., 200 A. “Marsh Point”; “Ridges,” on s. side Nanticoke River; and personalty. Test: Temperance Acworth, John Weall, Elizabeth Acworth, Robert Givan. 19, 451.

Temperance Acworth is probably the name of his eldest daughter. Elizabeth may be the grandmother.

Research Notes

Acworth's Delight had been sold by Richard's father to John Manlove in 1664 so Richard must have bought it back again.

This will is the only mention yet found of the sons of this family.

The son Richard married Elizabeth Huffington and they had children: Richard (born before 1735 and the eldest son); John (born about 1735); Thomas (born about 1737); Betty (born abt 1741); Louter (born about 1740)
