Louis Raymond was born[1] on 18 June 1872 in Rochester in the Medway District. Note that given names are absent in the GRO record but the birth year corresponds with Louis Raymond. He was the son of George Acworth and Charlotte Legett. Louis Raymond was baptised[2] on 1 September 1872 at Chatham, Kent. His father George Brindley Acworth had died in 1876 when Louis was only 4 years old. He was then brought up by his mother Charlotte.
In the 1881 England Census[3] Raymond (age 8) is living with his mother Charlotte Emily (age 43) at Langdon Road St Georges Terrace, Rochester. His siblings present are Cecil (age 14). Fanny Scott (age 20) and Elizabeth Harden (age 17) are servants.
In the 1891 England Census[4] Louis (age 18) is living in Rochester with his mother Charlotte (age 53) and his brother Robert William Harrison (age 20). Susannah Smith (age 29) and Flora E Smith (age 23) are servants.
Louis must have joined the Army before 1899 at the age of 27
Louis Raymond was a Captain in the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment (33rd Foot) - served in the South Africa War - in which he was twice wounded. Service dates 1899 - 1902 in Second Boer War[5] with 1st Battalion West Riding.
Louis Raymond Acworth married[6] May Vivienne Gertrude Amy Greville in May 1903 (Location unknown). The marriage is recorded in the Medway Index[7].
Returned[8] to Southampton on 22 Jun 1907 from Durban.
They had a son Cecil Raymond Greville born 1908 in Wetherby, Yorkshire.
Departed Southampton for the Cape on 19 Mar 1910.
In the England 1911 Census[9] Louis Raymond is serving in the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment in South Africa as a Major.
Louis Acworth in 1914 was Ordnance Officier, 3rd Class with rank of Major. [10]. He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.). He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps. In UK, World War I Pension Ledgers and Index Cards, 1914-1923, Louis Raymond Acworth is recorded with the rank of Lieut Col.
In 1920 he is returning[11] from South Africa with his wife and son. He states that South Africa is his last place of permanent residence.
Between 1921 and 1923 he may be the Louis Raymond living in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In 1927, Louis Raymond Acworth is living back in the UK at Churchfields, Salisbury in Wiltshire.
His wife (May Vivienne) died in Salisbury, Rhodesia on 10 September 1932.
Louis Raymond Acworth died[6] on 22 February 1934 in Salisbury, Rhodesia, South Africa. He had the rank of Colonel and had been awarded a CBE.
