Gwendoline Frances Acworth was the daughter of Amos Benjamine Acworth and Emily Anne Field. She was born[1] in 1890 - J Qtr. The birth was registered at Milton Regis, Kent.
In the 1891 Census[2], Gwendoline Frances (age 3 months) is living with her parents Amos Benjamin Acworth (age 29) and Emily Ann Field at Milton Regis, Kent.
Amos Benjamine Acworth appears to have absented himself from the family sometime in the late 1890s and before the 1901 Census where Emily is Head of House.
In the 1901 Census[3], Gwendoline Frances (age 10) is living with her mother Emily Anne Field (age 38) and her sister Hilda Irene (age 6) and brother John Pelham (age 3). Emily Anne Field is the Head of House on the Census return indicating that the marriage with Amos Benjamin was over.
In the 1911 Census[4] Gwendoline Frances (age 20) is living at 30 St Mary's Road, Frindsbury, Rochester, Kent with her mother Emily Anne Acworth (age 46 ), her sister Hilda Irene (age 17) and her brother John Pelham (age 13).
On 26 August 1911 there is a record[5] of Gwendoline (age 20), Hilda (age 17), John (age 11) and Emily (age 47) travelling from Bristol to Montreal, Canada. They are travelling under the name of Linnell. They seem to have returned in 1912[6] to Liverpool on 30 March 1912.
They maybe travelled to Canada to visit relatives before Gwendoline was married the following year. It is also possible that they are trying to meet with Amos Benjamin Acworth to sort out the marriage. When they return to England, two of the children leave for India not long after.
Gwendoline married[7] Herbert F Gordon at Aldrington: St Leonards[8], in Hove, Sussex on 18 June 1913. The Reverand J. H. Broadhead from Bromley: St. Lukes, Kent was officiating. Her mother Emily and her sister Hida Irene are shown as witnesses. Aldrington: St Leonards is in Hove close to Roman Street where Emily lives. A Google Maps image is at [9]. Wikipedia has a description of the church[10]
There is a record for the birth[11] of a daughter Eila Marjorie in 1921 at Edmonton, London.
In the 1939 England and Wales Register[12] Gwendoline (age 49) and Herbert Gordon (age 63) and are living in Hove, Sussex along with her mother Emily (age 79).
There is a death record[13] for Gwendoline France Gordon for 3rd Q 1982 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. There has not been any earlier association with Bradford - so this record is a bit of a mystery. Gwendoline would have been 91. A will[14] for a Gwendoline Frances Gordon gives a last address as 17 Cragside, Bradford and confirms death on 4 September 1982.
The 1911 Census return image on Ancestry is the original signed by Emily Anne Acworth.
Not sure of the meaning of the Linnell name in the outward bound shipping. Had Emily Ann (Field) Acworth married again?
If she did end up in Bradford then there is no information between 1955 and 1982 of her life. Her husband appears to also have died in Bradford.
