Alvin Acworth was born in Lewisham, Kent, England.

Birth

Alvin Richard Raynor was born[1] in December 1878 in Lewisham[2] He was the son of Raynor John Acworth and Selina Henrietta Williams and his siblings were: Malvina Olive, Maud Theodora and Frederick Alexander.

In the England 1881 Census[3] Alvin Richard Raynor was 2 and recorded as living with his grandparents Elijah and Mary and his uncles: William (age 18); Alfred (age 14); and Foster George (age 11) and aunts: Violetta (age 16) and Priscilla (age 9).

In the 1891 Census[4], Alvin Richard Raynor was 12 and was living with his father Raynor John who was 31 and his mother Selina Henrietta who was 35. Also recorded was Maud (age 7), Malvina (age 10) and Malvina Williams - aged 70 - who was Selina's mother.

In the 1901 Census[5], Alvin Richard Raynor (age 22) and living with his father Raynor John (age 41) and mother Selina Henrietta (age 46) at 3, Canterbury Road, Croydon, Surrey, England. Also present were his siblings Maud (age 19) and Frederick (age 8).

Marriage

Alvin Richard Raynor married[6] Alice Beatrice (age 31) on 27 December 1902 at St Simons Church, Hammersmith.

The marriage was clearly between two families well known to each other. The bride's brother Alfred Dawe was best man to the groom. The groom's sister Maud was a bridesmaid. Alice' brothers Arthur, Wally and Master Fred Dawe were there as were Miss Malvina Acworth and Mrs D Acworth.

Children

Alvin Richard and Alice Beatrice had four children:

Cecil Mauger Luce born 1905,
Phyllis Eileen born 1909 and twin boys (non-identical)
John Raynor and
Richard Alvin on 19 December 1916.

In the 1911 Census[7] Alvin (age 32) is living with his wife Alice (age 31) and their children Cecil (age 5) and Phyllis (age 1) at 'Emsworth', Crown Lane, Bromley, Bromley, Kent. They are supported by Alice Rothwell (age 17 - Servant, born in Brighton).

Army Service

In WW1 (in 1917) Alvin Richard Raynor was living with his brother (Frederick John) at St James Club, Piccadilly London West: in the Training Reserve Battalion.

In the England Census of 1921[8] Alvin Richard is living with his wife Alice Beatrice at 55, Crown Lane, Bromley. Their children present were: Cecil (age 15 - Occuptation: Art Student); Phyllis (age 11) and the non-identical twins John Raynor and Richard Alvin] (age 4). They were all born in Bromley. The family was assisted by a servant Elsie Phillips (age 37).

Alvin Richard Raynor is recorded as living at 55 Crown Lane, Bromley in 1915[9], 1920[10] and 1930[11].

He was a Stamp collector as a child and had assembled a large and detailed collection of pre 1900 stamps from around the world. These included stamps from the separate countries of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania prior to Federation in Australia in 1901.

Alvin Richard Raynor worked for the Inland Revenue commencing as a Clerk (Marriage Certificate) and rising through the ranks to the end of his career. He is believed to have travelled widely - certainly within Europe, judging by the family pictures and possibly further afield. His son (Richard Alvin) makes mention of travels in the Sudan. No traces of these have been uncovered though.

Death

Alvin Richard Raynor died[12]Bromley, Kent on 26 February 1936. Probate records[13] £880 7s and 3d which was left to his wife Alice Beatrice.

Research Notes

Richard Alvin says in letters to his mother during WW2 that she had travelled extensively in Northern Africa - visited Sudan, presumably with her husband Alvin Richard.
