Biography
Emma (Acworth) Read was born in Lambeth, Surrey, England.
Emma Amelia Lavinia Acworth was born in 1855 in Lambeth, Surrey, England to parents Louis Raymond Acworth and Emma Abbott. Her birth was registered in Lambeth, London, in the Dec quarter of 1855.[1][2]
In the 1861 Census Emma was living with her parents Louis Raymond (age 30) and Emma (age 33) and siblings at Plumstead, Greenwich, London, England. Her grandparents James (age 58) and Lavinia (age 64) are also in the household. Siblings present are Louis Joseph Acworth (age 7); Alice Clara Acworth (age 3) and Arthur James Acworth (age 11/12).[3]
In the 1871 Census Emma Amelia (age 15) was living in Camberwell, Surrey, England with her parents Louis Raymond (age 40) and Emma (age 43) along with her siblings: Louis Joseph Acworth (age 17); Alice Clara Acworth (age 13); Arthur James Acworth (age 10); Edward (Edwin) (age7) and Alfred William (William Alfred) (age 3).[4]
In the 1881 Census Emma Amelia (age 25) was living at 27 Harrisons Rise, Croydon, Surrey, England working as a 'Dressmaker'. She was sometimes referred to as Emma Amelia or as Amelia Emma. She was living with her parents Louis Raymond (age 50) and Emma (age 53) along with her siblings: Alice Clara Acworth (age 23); Arthur James Acworth (age 20); Edwin Herbert (age 17); William Alfred (age 13) and Evelyn Rosina Lily Acworth (age 8). Note that the first and second names seem to have been frequently switched - particularly for William Alfred.[5]
Emma Amelia did not follow her father and brother to Australia. She married John Thomas Read at Lewisham in 1883. William Grant Innes was a witness for John Thomas. [6]
They had 3 children: Emma Eliza Clara (born 1885); Thomas Louis (born 1886) and Arthur Horace (born 1898).
In the England 1901 Census Emma was living in Gillingham, Kent. Her husband John Thomas must have been away.[7]
In the 1911 England Census she was living with her husband. Their children Emma Clara Read (age 26), Thomas Read (age 24) and Arthur Horace Read (age 12) were still living at home.[8]
Emma Amelia (Acworth) Read died in Gillingham, Medway, Kent, England on 9 December 1925. She was buried in the Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham, Kent.[9][10]
