Amos Benjamin was born[1] in North Aylesford in 1862. He was the son of Amos Benjamin Acworth and Frances Grover.
Strood is across the River Medway[2] from Chatham where the Naval Dockyards were.
In the UK 1871 Census[3] Amos Benjamin (age 9) is living in Strood, Rochester, Kent with parents Amos Benjamin Acworth (age 30) and Frances Grover (age 30) and his brother William James (age 7).
In the UK 1881 Census[4] Amos Benjamin (age 18) is living at 40, High Street Strood, Rochester Kent and working as a Draftsman/Civil Engineer. His parents Amos Benjamin Acworth (age 40) and Frances Grover (age 40) and his brother William James (age 17) are living with him. Frances Annie Grover (age 16 and born in Montreal, Canada) is visiting. She would be the father's niece.
Amos Benjamin married[5] Emily Anne Field on 7 April 1886 in Medway at St. Margaret Next Rochester, Kent, England. They had 3 children: Gwendoline Frances (born September 1890); Hilda Irene (born September 1893) and John Pellam (born May 1898).
By the time of the 1891 Census[6] Amos Benjamin (age 29) is married and living with his wife Emily Anne (age 29) and their 3 month old child Gwendoline. The family is still in Strood, Kent.
The marriage between Amos Benjamin and Emily appears to have broken down at some time after the birth of their son in 1898 and it was suggested that Amos Benjamin left to go to Canada. In the 1901 Census he is not present at Milton on the Census return that includes his wife and children. There is no record of his death in the UK. In 1912 his father Amos Benjamine (Senior) migrates to Canada with his second wife and dies there. A reason for the migration was that his son was living there.
He is recorded as a Civil Engineer on his son John Pelham's marriage certificate on 22 December 1931.
There is no record yet found of his death in Canada or the USA.
The link with his cousin Francis Annie Grover who had been staying with the family earlier provides a possible clue. His father and second wife also move to Canada in 1912 - presumably to join them. His father was 71 at the time and died in Canada.
In the 1921 Canadian Census[7] is a reference to Francis Annie Grover (age 53 - migrated from England in 1908) the wife of James Grover (age 54 - also born in England) living at 137 352 Melton St S, Lambton West, Ontario, Canada. They have children recorded as: George Frederick James (age 22), Florence Edith Annie (age 14), Esther Mary (age 12) and Albert John (age 7). The conjunction of names servers to confuse!!!
In 1935 there is a record of the death[8] of Amos Acworth Linnell to a father Amos B. Acworth. The birth date for Amos Acworth Linnell is 1863 - between Amos Benjamin (junior) and William James.
It is curious that when Emily takes her 3 children to Montreal in 1912 - the passenger entries are for a Linnell. There is more to this.......
