Biography

John Hutton Adam was born 10 January 1886 in Costorphine, Midlothian, Scotland to George Adam and Isabella (Moir) Adam.[1]

In the 1891 census[2], present are: father George, age 46, now an upholsterer's warehouseman, and mother Isabella Moir, age 36, and six children: 5 sons and a daughter: Peter Adam, 10, born 1880, William Adam, 8, born 1883, George Adam, 6, born 1884, who is my grandfather, John Hutton Adam, 5, born 1886, Arthur Grant Adam, 4, born 1887 and Catherine Grace Adam, 0, born 1891. Also present was Georgina Young, 22, a general domestic servant, born 1869 in Haddingshire, East Lothian.

At some point before 1891, the Adams had moved to 47 Morningside Drive, St. Cuthberts, Newington, Midlothian, Scotland, which is a suburb of Edinburgh.

John was an apprentice grocer in 1901, aged 15, and living with his family at 6 Malta Terrace, Edinburgh (St George). Siblings present were George Adam (16), Arthur Adam (12), Catherine Adam (10), and two sisters: Isabella Adam (6) and Christina Adam (4). A married servant, Margaret Tweedale, 24, is also listed as a resident.[3]

At the 1911 census, John was 25 and a shop assistant at a grocers. He is still living at home, but will be married in October. The family has moved to 13 Lawrence Street, Partick, Govan, Glasgow. Also at home are siblings John Adam (25), Arthur Adam (22), Catherine Adam (20), Isabella Adam (16) and Christina Adam (14). No servants are listed.[4]

John married Janette Crawford Denny on 5 October 1911 at 90 1/2 Great Hamilton St., Glasgow. Their address was 11 Alexander St., Partick. Present were parents George Adam and Isabella (Moir) Adam, brother Arthur Grant Adam, and Jannette's parents George Denny and Jane (Simpson) Denny.[5]

John died[6] in 1954 in Burntisland, Fife, and Jannette in 1985.

There is little information on the couple after their marriage in 1911, including that of children.
