Biography

Helen Adam was baptized on 5 October 1827 at Lintrathen, Scotland^[1][2]. She was the daughter of James Adam and Euphemia Galloway and the eldest of nine children.

On the 3rd of May, 1851, Helen married James McHardie ^[3].

Helen and James had at least eleven children as follows:

1. John McHardie (1851-1910)
2. Janet McHardie (1855-1864)
3. James McHardie (1856-1857)
4. William Adam McHardie (1857-1946)
5. Unknown McHardie (1859-)
6. Thomas McHardie (1860-)
7. Euphemia (McHardie) Whyte (1861-1916)
8. Helen McHardie (1863-)
9. Elizabeth McHardie (1866-)
10. James McHardie (1868-)
11. Stewart Adam McHardie (1872-1878)

We know from the headstone of Helen and James^[4], that seven of their children died at a young age: five sons died in infancy, one son at age six, and one daughter was ten. There is evidence of John McHardie (1851-1910), William Adam McHardie (1857-1946), Euphemia (McHardie) Whyte (1861-1916), Helen McHardie (1863-), and Elizabeth McHardie (1866-) living into adulthood, so we can surmise that Helen gave birth to another child, although no records could be found to prove this.

Although her gravestone says she died in 1895, Helen died on 22 July 1894 from "Fatty degeneration of Heart" according to her death record.^[5].
