Biography

Most of the names and dates of the Adams family came from "Frederick Findings", a short lived historic publication that dealt with families and happenings in old Frederick Co. The publisher, Michael Pollard, was an Adams descendent and collected the data on the Adams family. Where possible, I've tried to reconfirm his info using info from the Hopewell Friends Records.

Family data in Kerns book p. 248-249 based on "The Adams Family of Frederick and Hampshire Counties, Virginia" by Michael Pollock, FREDERICK FINDINGS, V4 #2, pp.95-96) Info in brackets is mine.

"JOSEPH Adams was born circa 1756 [Ohio Quaker Records give birth as 1760] in Frederick County (VA), and died circa 1838 in Highland County, Ohio. He married Mrs. MARY (Wright) Thatcher, widow of Samuel Thatcher of Berkeley County, VA. JOSEPH was disowned by Hopewell Meeting [Quaker Church] (1781) for public drunkeness, rudeness, and fornication. MARY was disowned on April 4, 1785 for fornication. [Their first child was born July 18, 1786.] In 1795 and 1796, MARY and JOSEPH were readmitted to Hopewell Meeting, In 1825, they migrated from Frederick County to Highland County."

Joseph Adams, the son of John and Hannah Adams, was born in 1759 in Frederick Co, VA. (See Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy V5: 217 Fairfield Meeting: 1839, 3, 4 Joseph d. ae 79 bur Fairfield. (March 4, 1839.) Age at death on headstone 79 yrs 11 mos, 23 days which makes birth date 9 March 1759.

Although no marriage record has been found, it appears that Joseph widow Mary Wright Thatcher in 1785 because April 4, 1785 MARY (Wright) Adams is disowned (from Quaker membership) for marrying contrary to discipline --ie outside of the Quaker faith.. Their first child, Hannah Adams was born July 18, 1786. It is difficult to track Joseph and Mary through the Frederick Co, VA records as there appears to be at least 2 JOSEPH Adams, father and son. And at least 2 MARY Adams-- sister or wife of JOSEPH Sr. and several MARY Thatchers, and MARY Wrights.

That JOSEPH is deceased by June 1840 is confirmed by Deed Book 8, June 5, 1840 which states that mortgagors acknowledge right title, claim in on and to real estate of JOSEPH Adams dc. This is probably JOSEPH, Sr. as is closer to his date of death than son JOSEPH, Jr.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
