Biography

Joseph Adams was born on 25 Aug 1668 in Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts, son of Peter Adams and Rachel Newcome. He died on 09 Dec 1748 in Canterbury, Windham, Connecticut. [1]

About 1690 he had married Mary Davenport, daughter of Charles Davenport of Dorchester, Massachusetts and sister of Abigail Davenport who married Thomas Adams of Canterbury, Connecticut 23 Feb 1737. [2]

His will was written April 7, 1744; proved Dec. 27, 1748. In it he gives one equal half of his estate to his wife, "Mary," the other half to his only natural and well-beloved son Joseph, and divides his house, barn and tools. To the three daughters who, he says, live at home with him, Mary, Rachel and Ruth, he gives the part left to his wife after her decease. He gives his time (sic) to Ephraim Paine, who was indentured to him; and to his six daughters Mary Adams, Hannah Pike, Abigail Pike, Experience Hyde, Rachel Adams and Ruth Adams, he gives his lands on the east of the country road. His wife Mary and son Joseph were his executors.

March 16, 1720: Joseph, then of Medfield, Mass., purchased land of John Cady and his wife Elizabeth, 88 acres in Canterbury, Connecticut: a mansion or dwelling house, orchard and improvements, near Blackwell's brook; Rev. Edward Spalding on the north and east, Thomas Davenport on the south, and Jonathan Waldo on the west.

1721: Joseph Adams sold his place in Medfield and settled in Canterbury, Connecticut.

There seems to be some incongruity in this profile. The date of marriage to Mary Davenport is listed as 3 Nov 1724 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, but the date of birth for his daughter Experience is 18 Oct 1716, in Medfield, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Is there potentially a transcription error in either the marriage date or the birth date? For example, DOM 3 Nov 1714 instead of 1724 or DOB 18 Oct 1726 instead of 1716? Or could the marriage date just be completely wrong, since the son Joseph Jr. listed on the profile has a DOB of 1707.

Experience doesn't belong here, Joseph and Mary had the following children: Betsy 1725, Paul 1726/27, Joseph 1731, Jonas 1732. I will remove Experience for now

He named Experience (Adams) Hyde as a daughter in his will, however, but perhaps not from this marriage? A previous marriage?

I think that she does belong, but the marriage record is off. Joseph Jr is listed with a dob of 1707. And Joseph Jr.’s first marriage is listed as 1738, which would have been impossible if he was born in 1731.

I think there’s some family conflation. Joseph’s will says that his only natural son was Joseph Jr, and then listed 6 daughters.

There is no mention of a Betsy, Paul, or Jonas.

I’ve been digging thru records, and I’m wondering if the 1724 marriage date could be for Joseph Jr and his first wife Mary Cady, and the Mary’s were just mixed up in the secondary sources.

Marriage date is abt 1690, more reasonable. Lets see if we can fix the marriage date and add some correct children, Joseph Jr being first.
