Biography

This profile is part of the Chebacco Parish, Massachusetts One Place Study.

Nathaniel Adams was born December 8, 1647 in Ipswich and died November 28, 1736, aged eighty nine years. He married Mary Dickinson, June 30, 1668. They had one son and probably other children whose names are unknown. This son was Samuel.

Samuel Adams, born in Ipswich March 8, 1676 [1] vs June 29, 1682 [2] , married Mary Burley, who was born 1688 vs. April 28, 1696 (sic), daughter of Andrew and Mary (Conant) Burley of Ipswich, intentions published September 28, 1706. [3] [2] [4]

Samuel died August 13, 1747 [3] [2] aged 71 years. [1]

Samuel wrote his will on July 23, 1747. In it he left bequests to: [5]

  • wife Mary
  • sons Samuel, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Andrew, James and John
  • daughter Mary Stow
  • daughter Sarah Whipple
  • daughter Elizabeth Dane
  • daughter Eunice [5]

His widow Mary died at Worcester March 5, 1772, in her 85th year. [2]

[Note: Sources conflict on the dob of both Samuel Adams and his wife Mary Burley. Neither birth date can be found in the VR]

[Note: Sources conflict on Samuel's age at death. The Crane text says age at death in 1747 is 71, making his birth more likely 1676.]

[Note: From age at death, Mary more likely born c1688? FAG gives her an 1686 Ipswich dob that is actually recorded in IpsVR as her brother Andrew, not Mary. FAG is unsourced, and there are no matching grave markers for this couple. ]

[ Note: Burleigh Family Test says Mary born in 1696, making her age 10 at the time of her marriage.  ? likely a typo]

[Note: Children, all the above texts vary of the births of the children, where possible the Ips VR are used, which recorded more of their baptisms, than births]

[Note: FAG - no marker found, previously indicated Samuel was buried in Highland Cemetery, Ipswich, Essex. Same memorial now says Old Burying Ground, Ipswich. As FAG is entirely unsourced, it likely should not be used]
