Like two of my great-grandparents whose gravestone has Incorrect dates for their births, the gravestone of my ancestor Ensign Matthew Adams of Simsbury, Connecticut, has an incorrect date for his death: March 9, 1764. The town records of Simsbury were transcribed by Albert C. Bates and published in 1898 say otherwise. Bates, Albert C., transcriber, Simsbury Connecticut Births Marriages and Deaths (Hartford, 1898), Library of Congress 188. "Enfign Mathew Adams Departed this Life the 9th : Day of March 1765. of a Confumption". When I realized that records of Matthew’s death appearing on the Internet almost universally claimed it to be 1764, I decided to look for corroboration of the transcribed town records and found the following evidence: Matthew’s will was signed on February 21, 1765 and his inventory was signed March 28, 1765 by his appraisers. Matthew’s will and property appraisal are preceded and followed by records dated in the year 1765. Probably relying on photographs of the incorrect gravestone, countless Internet family trees and a Find A Grave memorial are perpetuating the 1764 year of death error. Hi, Larry ~ I finally had a chance to work on the profile of Susannah (Eno) Adams and then realized that she had duplicate Mathew/Matthew Adams for husbands. He probably married her in 1745 (first child b. 1746) because she would have been too young to have married in 1741. Despite his gravestone photo, Matthew died in 1765, not 1764. (his Will was signed in 1765; town records as transcribed by Alfred C. Bates, p.188. I am willing to work on his biography and sources if you will okay the merge. Thanks, Diane
RE; Your comments on Mathew's death date. Is it possible that both dates are correct with that being a double year date? e.g. 9 Mar 1764/65. I know WikiTree doesn't allow that type of dating, which can confuse things. Larry
The Gregorian system (wherein the 1st month was January) was adopted universally by 1752. It's my understanding the American Colonies were among the last to adopt it. We're still stubbornly resistant to change: case in point -- the metric system of measurement. The only countries who have hung on to the British Imperial sytem of measurement (pounds and ounces a feet and inches) are three: Myanmar (Burma), Liberia and the United States. I agree that WikiTree's refusal to allow the double dates is very confusing. Diane
