Nicolaus Adams was born 17 May 1799 in Hirten, Dist. Mayen, Rhineland (Germany). Nicolaus was the son of Johann Peter Adams and Anna Gertrude Gilles. Nicolaus, his wife Susanna nee Gaeb and their five children left Hirten in the summer of 1841, sailed for 38 days to reach New York, arriving on 2 August 1841. They traveled from New York to Chicago by rail and from Chicago to Johnsburg, by oxen-drawn wagon, arriving in August 1841, along with Nicolaus Gaeb, brother of Susanna Adams nee Gaeb, Jacob Schmitt and his family, Nicholas Frett and his family. The Adams, Schmitt and Frett families were the first families to settle in what would become Johnsburg, and they organized the parish and church, St John the Baptist Catholic Church.
