Biography

Michael James "Mike" Adams (May 5, 1930 – November 15, 1967), (Maj, USAF), was an American aviator, aeronautical engineer, and USAF astronaut. He was the first American space mission fatality.[1]

1930 Born in Sacramento, Sacramento, California, USA
1950 Enlisted in US Air Force. During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Air Medal.

1958 Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, University of Oklahoma
1962 Selected for the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards Air Force Base
1965 Selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program, by USAF in USAF Group 1[2]
1966 Chosen as replacement, first flight in X-15, flew seven X-15 flights, attained a top speed of Mach 5.59 and a maximum altitude of 81,077 meters on separate missions
1967 Died in Johannesburg, Kern, California, USA in X-15 flight 191, exceed 50 miles (80467 m) in altitude, thus qualifying him to be a USAF Astronaut. Awarded Astronaut wings posthumously.
