Stephen was born in 1854. His parents were Stephen and Susanna (nee Lee) [1]
In 1861 Stephen was living with his parents in Milkwall as well as 3 sisters and a brother. His father was a Collier. [2]
In 1871 the family had moved to Yorkley and Stephen was listed as being born in Molesey Green. The census shows that the family lived in Molesey Green, then moved to Milkwall, back to Molesey Green and then Yorkley. Stephen aged 16 and his older brother George, aged 17 were Coal Miners like their father. There were 9 children living in the household. [3]
On 31st July 1879 Stephen married Rosa Ann Morse. She listed her father as a Publican. Thomas Morse and Martha Adams were witnesses. Stephen was 25 and Rosa 18. [4]
In 1881 Stephen, Rosa and their 7 month baby Kate E G were living at the George Inn, Fetter Hill. There are pictures and details about the pub online: [5]. Stephen is an Inn Keeper and Collier. [6]
10 years later Stephen has left the Pub and Fetter Hill and moved to Bream Eaves, where many of his wife's family lived - her brother and his family lived next door. He was a Collier and the couple had 3 children living there. The family had moved at least 5 years previously judging by the locations of their children's births. [7]
In 1901 Stephen was 47 and Rosa 40. Stetphen was a Coal Miner Underground, Main Road. 5 children lived with them, the youngest, Doris just 14 months. [8]
By 1911 Stephen and Rosa had been married for 30 years and they'd had 8 children who were all still living. Stephen was a Colliery Deputy underground, son Alec was a Colliery Roadman underground, and son Frank was a Coal Hewer as well. Leonard was now the youngest child. aged 5. They lived in Pleasant View, Bream Eaves, nr Lydney and the house had 5 rooms for the 8 of them. [9]
Stephen passed away aged 68 in Bream Eaves in 1920. He was buried on August 31st at Bream. [10]. Rosa died 6 years later.
