Biography

Joseph Adams Sr. immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Joseph Adams was born in 1626 in England.^[1] son of Henry Adams and Edith Squire. ^[2] [1]

He married Abigail Baxter, daughter of Gregory and Margaret (Paddy) Baxter on 26 November 1650 at Braintee, Massachusetts.^{[1] [3]}

He was a maltster by trade, made a Freeman of the Colony on 18 May 1653 at Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony and one of the Selectman in 1673.^[1]

Joseph Adams died on 6 December 1694 in Braintree, Massachusetts Bay Colony^{[1] [4]}

He was the father of twelve children with one wife Abigail Baxter. John Adams and Mary Adams died young. (Two later children who lived were named for John and Mary.)^[5]

Notes

Joseph Adams inherited his father's homestead, as after about 1651 all the children had left Braintree. He was constable about 1689, and surveyor of highways 1693. The Joseph Adams who made Freeman of the Colony 18 May 1653 at Boston, seems to be this John Adams^[6]

To eldest son Joseph Adams 1 a. salt meadow at Hough's Neck.

To son John Adams £40 sterling. To son Peter Adams all my dwelling house & malt house & tools & vessels & my barn, orchard & meadow adjoining, being the homestead about 4 acres on both sides the way together with that land as be yet in my possession at Manaticut that was bought part of John Cleverly & part of Joseph Crosbe about 26 acres & all my land at feere field being three lots of 2 acres, 5 acres & 6 acres, also 4 a. salt meadow by that as was Mr. Flints meadow called Wash meadow & my island of meadow near the town ground. To dau. Mehitable Adams £20 sterling & 1 feather bed that now standeth in my parlor chamber. Rest of my estate in moveables to my five daughters equally Hannah Sables, Abegal Bass. Bethyah Web, Mary Bass & Mehitable Adams. Son Peter sole executor. Six shillings apiece to all my grandchildren living at my decease. Peter to let son John have 10 bushels of apples yearly so long as he shall fetch them. Mehitable to live in the house as long as she live a maide.
