Biography

Richard Adams was born at Medfield, MA on March 11, 1686/7, son of John (son of Peter) and Micall (Bloyse) Adams. [1][2] [3]

Richard married, Mary Cleveland on March 30, 1730. [4][3]

[Notes: 1. His wife Mary Cleveland is supposedly the daughter of Edward and Deliverance (Palmer) Cleveland of North Kingston, RI, later of Canterbury, CT. 2. Richard and Mary may have had a second daughter Mary, died Mar. 7, 1732/3; (V.1; p.66) Needs further research]

They had one child, Lucy, born on July 12, 1731. [4][3]

Richard died on April 17, 1733. [4][3]

After his death his widow Mary married Samuel Batts of Canterbury on Jan. 8, 1735/6. [4] [3]

On April 18, 1736, Mrs. Mary Butts, relict of Richard Adams, deceased, received £30 and 18 shillings from the estate of Richard Adams, and their daughter Lucy Adams, received £61 and 16 shillings. Lucy gave a receipt on June 3, 1750, for £177, 12 s., 4 d., which was her portion of her father's estate. [3]

His father, John Adams died February 26 1724. The settlement of his estate is recorded in the Canterbury, CT books: Vol. 5: p. 393. [2]

  • Whereas Mr John Adams of Canterbury, late deceased died, seized of about one hundred acres of land bounded by that of Isaac Adams on the north; west by the land of the heirs of Mr. John Adams; east by the land of Elisha Paine, and John Adams gave the said land to his four sons: Samuel, John, Isaac, and Richard, who were the then surviving sons of the said John Adams; and the said heirs held the land in common until about 1734, when Richard died and left one only child Lucy; whereupon she held the land in common with the other heirs until 1743, when Samuel died, leaving only two daughters Amy, late wife of Thomas Nowling, deceased, and Mehitable, late wife of John Smith deceased, whereupon his share descended to these daughters, Mehitable died in 1750, and left four children whereupon these heirs held the land in common it is now desired to make a more natural division.
