Biography

Catherine was born in 1861 in DeKalb County, GA. She was only two years old when her father was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg. She and her younger brother Lathiel lived with her mother Anna Catherine Ball and her step-father John R. Power in various places in Georgia. In 1881 she married Robert Bruce Cheek. After a few years they set out for Arkansas and Texas where Robert had relatives. They got as far as Arkansas when she had her first child in 1883. They went back to Georgia where they had five more children. After 1896 they headed for Texas one more time. After living a short time in Cooke County, Texas. Around 1902 they made one more move to Greer County, Oklahoma. They homesteaded on a farm north of Mangum. She passed away in Mangum 1936 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery with her husband and sister-in-law.
