Biography

Birth

Capt. Jonathan Adams was born on 4 April 1655 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Ensign Edward Adams and Lydia Penniman. [1]

Marriages

On 20 March 1677-8 Jonathan, at age 22, married Mary Ellis, at age 17, daughter of Thomas Ellis and Mary Wight, in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[2]

Mary Ellis Adams died in Medfield on August 1, 1717[3]

On 12 December 1717, Jonathan, at age 62, married Mehitabel Plimpton Cheney, daughter of John Plimpton and Jane Damon, in Medway, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[4] 8,9,10,6,7. She survived him, then died in Medfield on August 8, 1725.

Jonathan and Mary had, all recorded in Medfield:[5]

  • Marie, b. Aug. 4, 1681 (p. 12), married Henry Smith, Mar. 4, 1717-8 (page 112)

  • Jonathan, b. May 7, 1696 (p.11), m. Dorcas Mason bef. 1718[7]

Life in Medway

Jonathan was one of the first settlers of Medway, moving across the Charles River when the area was still part of Medfield, and was the first Deacon of the Medway Church.

Death

Capt. Jonathan Adams died on Monday, 24 January 1717-8 in Medway, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, at age 62 years, 9 months and 20 days.[8]

VITAL RECORDS OF MEDWAY (Boston, 1905), Wife is called Mehitable "Chaney." Although not called widow, she appears to be the widow of Joseph Cheney, who died at Medfield, 16 Sep 1704. Joseph Cheney and Mehitable Hinsdell were married at Medfield 21 Jul 1691 (VITAL RECORDS OF MEDFIELD, 124, 198).
