This Sarah Adams Stroud is not the first wife of Mark Stroud and the mother to his children. This connection would imply, based on her death date in 1868, that she and Mark Stroud divorced, and she left behind an infant daughter (Sally Stroud Nelson b. 1802 VA) with Mark Stroud the father, to marry a James Stroud and move to Pulaski County, Kentucky and start a new family with James. It is certainly not out of the question, but I have not found it to be the truth. That would have been quite a scandal for that day and time and talk would have led to many outlandish rumors. If John W Stroud was born in abt. 1816 VA, who was his mother, if she married James Stroud in 1805? His father is noted to have been Mark Stroud, and he stayed in southern WV and Lawrence Co., KY. I suspect that Mark Stroud's first wife had several children with him, but some of those children died young, thus leaving the gap between Sally Stroud Nelson b. 1802 VA and John W. Stroud b. 1816 VA and the mother died shortly after John W. Stroud's birth, possibly between 1820 to 1825, thus leading up to Mark Stroud remarrying to Sarah Miller in Cabell Co., WV in April 1827, as both were widowed. There are several Miller families residing within close proximity to Mark and Sarah Miller Stroud in the 1850 Lawrence Co., KY census, some potentially Sarah Miller Stroud's grandchildren.

This Sara Adams married an Ansel Stroud and they moved to Pulaski County, KY. She is being confused with the first and second wife of MARK STROUD b. 1775 VA/d. bef. 1859 Lawrence Co., KY. In the 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850 Floyd County, KY and then the Lawrence County, KY census years, Mark Stroud is found on tax and census records. He gave consent for his daughter Sally Stroud b. abt 1802 VA to marry William Nelson b. about 1801 NC (s/o Emanuel Nelson/Frances Smith) in Floyd County, KY in March 1822, and their first child, Eveline Nelson was born in 1823, later to marry Thomas Wiley, grandson of Jenny Sellards Wiley. Their second child was Farmer Nelson born 1825 Floyd Co., KY/d. Jan 1862 Bowling Green, KY as a Confederate POW from the extreme exposure to the elements. One of their youngest sons, Emanuel Nelson born 1833 Wayne Co., WV has listed on his death record 1923 in Lincoln Co., WV that his parent's are Wm. Nelson & Saly Stroud. Emanuel married a McCann and they named a son John Wesley McCann. MARK STROUD b. 1775, is found in the marriage records of Cabell County, WV as marrying a Sarah Miller in April 1827, his second marriage, and Sarah Miller potentially being a widow, herself, based on her given age of 70 in the 1850 Lawrence County, KY census with husband Mark Stroud being listed as age 75, just five years difference. In 1827, Wayne Co., (part of Cabell County) was not created yet, but these counties were adjacent to Lawrence Co., KY, across the Levisa River. Mark's daughter Sally Stroud Nelson and her husband William and their family moved in the 1830's into what became Wayne Co., WV (abt. 1842). A John W. Stroud born about 1816 had married a Matilda Marcum (second marriage for John Stroud) in Logan Co., WV and they are found residing in Logan Co., WV census, after leaving his first wife Frances Fanny Wiley Stroud, prior to 1850, possibly about 1847, because Fanny Stroud age 24, is found residing in 1850 Wayne Co., WV census with Farmer Nelson age 25, his wife Matilda (listed as Malinda) age 18, their son Allen Nelson age 1. On the same census page, at the top, is Thomas and Eveline Nelson Wiley and their family. Thomas Wiley is a brother to Frances Fanny Wiley Stroud. Also, on the 1850 Wayne Co., WV census Harmon Stroud age 21, is residing in the dwelling of his father in law Henry Mainard age 46, wife Sarah age 53, along with Sarah A (Mainard) Stroud age 21, daughter to Henry and wife to Harmon, and on the second page is Wesley Stroud, age 15 (b. abt. 1834), and Martha Stroud age 07 (b. abt. 1843). Martha Stroud married a James Babor in Wayne Co., WV in 1860, and she listed her parent's as "M. Stroud." A John Wesley Stroud b. 1834 Wayne Co., WV stated in his Civil War Pension application that his parent's names were William Stroud and Rachel Nelson, and that he had a brother and cousins still residing in Wayne Co., WV during his application interview in 1895 Fayette Co., WV. This particular John Wesley Stroud b. 1833 died in Feb. 1922. He and his first wife Laura Jane Townsend Stroud (d. Dec. 1911 Fayette Co., WV) had a son named William H. Stroud that was a veterinarian in Fayette Co., WV and he passed in Jan 1967, buried in the Nuttal Cemetery. MARK STROUD and his second wife SARAH MILLER STROUD are found residing in 1850 Georges Creek, Lawrence Co., KY at ages 75 and 70, respectively, and listed as "paupers." It is my suspicion through my years of researching this family, and residing in Logan Co., WV that the John Wesley Stroud that listed William Stroud and Rachel Nelson as his parents, is a grandson to MARK STROUD and his first wife unknown. I, also, suspect that RACHEL NELSON is a daughter to Old Emanuel Nelson and Frances Fanny Smith Nelson, as they resided in Floyd/Lawrence Co., KY in 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850, and that the William Stroud is a son of MARK STROUD of Lawrence Co., KY, a sibling to Sally Sarah Stroud Nelson and Rachel Nelson Stroud was a sibling to William Nelson (s/o Old Emanuel Nelson/Frances Smith Nelson). The young Martha Stroud age 07, in the Wayne Co., WV census living with Harmon Stroud age 21 and Wesley Stroud age 15, is a confusing piece of the family tree. I will be acquiring documents to help prove, hopefully, that MARK STROUD and ANSEL STROUD are two completely different human beings, as they cannot reside in two separate counties during the same years for decades. This SARAH ADAMS STROUD has been placed as a wife of MARK STROUD in error as there is a marriage record of a Sarah Adams marrying an Ansel Stroud in a central Kentucky county, but MARK STROUD has always resided on the eastern county line bordering West Virginia his entire life. Thanks

I recently received the military widow's pension application for this Sarah Adams Stroud. She was only married to Ansel Stroud and they resided in Pulaski County, Kentucky until Ansel's death. She NEVER mentioned under oath of ever previously having been married.

She is the daughter of Robert Warson Adams and Rebecca Wylie Adams. A record for Robert already exists and these two should be connected.
