James left Ireland in 1847 with his family. Sailing from Belfast in January of 1847 aboard the ship "Glenmore", they arrived in New York, New York USA on February 9, 1847. James and the family subsequently settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
James passed away on February 7, 1875 and he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his wife and two of their children.
