Biography

John ADAMSON was born in October 1848 in Rugeley, Stafford, Staffordshire, England. The second son of Swainston Adamson and Faith Whitworth.

He married Emma Young (aka Hannah) BROWN on 19 June 1873 at St Luke, West Holloway, Islington, England. The had 8 children together.

In 1880 John followed in his fathers’ footsteps and went to South Africa to work on the railways. He arrived in Cape Town on 25 Sep 1880 on his way to Algoa Bay, sailing on the SS Balmoral Castle which left London 31/8/1880 & Dartmouth 3/9/1880. (Ref. 3/8/2. Passenger lists). As an Engineer he built railways in Cape Province, Free State and the Transvaal.

As well as working on the railways John was a farmer and when he died on 27 Feb 1913 Blaauwdrif, Orange Free State, South Africa, he was buried on his farm Adamsonsvlei previously Dupreez laager in Winburg, Free State, South Africa. (Which is in the Welkom area)
