DEATH. 14 Nov 1923, Southwark, South Australia, Australia
DEATH NOTICE. ADCOCK.—On the 14th November (suddenly) Thomas, dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Jane Adcock, of William street, North Croydon. Peace, perfect peace.
OBITUARY. Extraordinary circumstances marked the death of Mr. Thomas Adcock, of William street, North Croydon, which occurred on Wednesday night. He officiated at a wedding ceremony, immediately after which he expired. For some years he conducted a business in Rundle street, Adelaide, as a photographer, and while thus engaged he was offered the pastorate of the Bentham Street Christian Church, which he accepted. He laboured there for a considerable period, and was greatly esteemed as a preacher and pastor. Subsequently Mr. Adcock was one of the promoters of the Wayville Baptist Church, of which be had the oversight for a time. Later he went into business again, but he conducted occasional church services. He was about 60 years of age, and has left a widow and a large family.
OBITUARY. The Rev. Thomas Adcock, the beloved pastor of the Southwark Baptist Church, had just pronounced the words which made two members of his congregation one, when he sank quietly to his knees. A murmur of awe and consternation arose in the crowded church. The bridegroom stretched out a hand and pressed his fingers to the bowed forehead of the kneeling figure, and touched not flesh, but clay. The pastor was dead. A drama almost as poignant was being enacted outside the church. William Thomas Adcock, who had driven his father to the ceremony, was waiting to drive him home again. He saw a movement In the crowd, which, surged around the doorway, and suddenly the doors were shut. He knew the ceremony was not over, and a premonition that something was wrong with his father gripped his heart. He voiced his fear to a. companion. A motor car, arriving on the scene with a doctor, told of some serious trouble. Minutes later the waiting son interrogated a passing youngster. 'What is wrong over there, sonny?' he asked, pointing to the church. 'A man has died.' the boy replied. 'and they have sent for another minister to complete the service.' 'Who is it?' he queried, and again a cold feeling was at his heart. In two short, careless words the boy pronounced sentence. 'The minister.' he said, as he turned and walked away. Mr. William Thomas Adcock, on behalf of his mother and the rest of the family, stated that every member of the family had been comforted and sustained by the thought that their father had died surrounded by the people, and in an atmosphere that he loved. 'He always expressed the hope,' Mr. Adcock continued, 'that the end would come quietly and quickly. He had been looking forward to marrying this particular young couple. because both of them have been great workers in the interest of his church. The bride was a Sunday-school teacher, and a great worker, and the bridegroom was the church organist. 'For this reason, then, his last earthly task was surely a labor of love. I know, and we all know, that he would not have wished it otherwise.'
