In about 1877 he married Francina Catharina Johanna Engelbrecht who then passed away in the Anglo Boer War; there were no children.
The widower, now aged 48, married widow Anna Margaretha Adriana (Pienaar) Retief, aged 38, in Bethulie, Orange River Colony, on 17 August 1903.[1]

Richard did not have any children; Francina who was supposed to be his child was actually that of his brother Samuel, born with the death of his wife. He farmed at Vaalbank, Orange Free State, when he passed away in the Bloemfontein National Hospital on 23 January 1928; he was 73 years old.[2][3]
