According to the record, James Adey was born in Christchurch, Hampshire, England 6-Mar-1829 (and christened 31-Sep-1831), but this needs checking against original records. He was the son of William Adey (~1792-~1879) and Mary (Butler) Adey (~1791-~1860). He was employed as an agricultural labourer and later as an agricultural/farm carter. According to family tradition, he was married twice and had a son by each wife. He was first married on 19-Sep-1852 in Christchurch, Hampshire to Elizabeth (READ) Adey and his son Henry/Harry was born 4-Mar-1855. His first wife must have died , because he was then married on 17-Oct-1859 at Ripley Independent Chapel, Sopley, Christchurch, Hampshire to Elizabeth (CLENCH) Adey (~1835-1925). His second son Fred Adey was born on 8-Jan-1860 in Christchurch, Hampshire. He passed away on 28-Oct-1915, aged about 86.[1]
