Biography

The Birth and Death Dates are a rough estimate. See the text for details.

Sherrod Adkins was born about 1766 to Parker and Polly [Mary] Adkins.[1]

From Ronnie Adkins' book:[2]

Christena m(2) 11 Feb. 1798 in Montgomery Co. Sherrod B. Adkins s/o Parker and Mary (# 127), her 1st cousin.

Between 1810-1815 Christena and Sherrod joined their brothers and sisters in the Beech Fork area of Cabell (Wayne) Co. Va. (W.Va.) and made their home near Christen's brother Sherrod. Christena d 1822 and is buried at the old family cemetery near the mouth of Bowen's Creek.

Sherrod B. has often been confused with Christena's brother, Sherrod Adkins (136); they were near the same age, 1st cousins, lived in close [proximity] and died within five years of each other making it extremely easy for older family members and researchers to mistake them. Some facts that may help others to discern between the two follow:

  • Sherrod B. was living in the household of his son, Archibald in the first (1850) census of Wayne Co. W.Va.
  • His death certificate in Wayne Co. 1859 states that he was son of Parker and Mary
  • His will proven same year leaves one dollar to each of Archibald's children (Archibald had d 1856).

Sherrod s/o Mary had d also in 1856 so that Sherrod B's death in 1859 with certificate stating he was son of Parker and Mary, will leaving one dollar to each of Archibald's children and his being buried beside of Christena clearly proves the distinction between tile two.

As stated above Sherrod B. d 1859 and is buried beside Christena at the oldest family cemetery in the area near the mouth of Bowen's Creek. Their graves have nice markers that are still easy to distinguish dates, names, etc.

  • 1342 Christena b ca 1804 Montgomery Co. Va. m John Adkins (#1364) s/o Sherrod and Sarah. Line under him.

Research Notes

The 1850 US Census shows both Sherrod's that are generally confused with each on the same page. This Sherrod is shown in the home of his son Archibald but shows him as 74 years old which suggests a birth about 1776.[3] Both Sherrod's also appear on the same page of the Death Index with this one appearing on the left side of the page with a 1859 death at the age of 93, suggesting a birth about 1766 which is the date used here.

Adkins-9844 and Adkins-2797 appear to represent the same person because: I came to Sherrod B. Atkins through my relative Lydia Lattice Parsons Eplin and the four children that they shared. Would you please merge them or advise me of my error. Thanks, Ray.

Adkins-433 and Adkins-2797 appear to represent the same person because: There are some dates off, but also some overlapping info. Was there just one Sherrod this generation and we need to merge these and fix dates, etc.? or were there two?

Anyway, they are backwards. Probably two people with conflated death dates.

I may have contributed to the confusion. If so, my apologies.

Two different people with different parents.
Edited- will need to research who this one married.

Christena does not appear to have a profile on WikiTree. She should be a daughter of Mary Adkins

Adkins Family of Virginia which draws off of 2 main sources mentioned in William Atkinson and Elizabeth Parker's profiles: Grace Gregory's Book of Rememberance and the Adkins Family of Virginia by Jane A Leavell.

I've found information that Sherrod's Estate was appraised on 27 Nov 1858 so that would mean he died before that date. It is found in this source:

Source Citation Will Books; Author: West Virginia. County Court (Wayne County); Probate Place: Wayne, West Virginia

Pattie (3 years later), does the will mention any children?

I’ll need to check my records this weekend. If I found the will I would have downloaded it unless it was just an index transcription.
