I know most trees show he passed away in 1808 however the Kentucky death record shows he died on 1 Dec 1856 at the age of 100. It provides his father as Richard and his mother as Molly. It shows he was born in Pittsylvania County, VA and died in Sandy, Kentucky.

After 5 months, no comments. The Find a Grave source shown on profile also lists the 1 Dec 1856 date I've stated from the records. I also do not show he married Rachel. I have Joel, son of Richard, first wife as Celia Young and second wife as Sarah Stanley.

I am not sure that the two Joel's are the same person.

The marriage record to Rachel can be found here:

What's interesting about this marriage bond is that a Joseph Akin posts the bond. Joel doesn't have a brother named Joseph, so who is this guy that knows Joel so well he is willing to post a bond for his marriage? Generally someone is a close family member to do this and often a father or brother. In 1780, Joel's father Richard is still alive. He would've been about 63 years old so maybe he is infirm and unable to post the bond himself. Then that usually falls to a brother or the groom posts his own bond but here we have a Joseph Akin (Jos. is an abbreviation for Joseph and the name of Akin could just be a mis-spelling of Atkin/Adkin). Further on the page, however, we see the same Jos. Akin post bond for many other people- James Farmer, Moses Hutchings, Tobias Kingary, and many others. It could be possible that Jos. Akin was simply a bondsman for those that didn't have a family member to post bond and that he was paid for his services. Could be he was family to all these people but that is highly unlikely.

Also, the marriage bond is dated April 9th, 1780 so the marriage was after this date.

I am still searching for confirmation to prove/disprove that there are two Joel's and to confirm the records of the other wives as shown in recent genealogy books published on Richard's family line (Adkins Kith and Kin, Elliott County, Kentucky Research Group, Inc., "The Adkins Family of Kentucky, being a record of the family of William Adkins and Elizabeth Parker whose descendants settled in Kentucky," 24 Hour Books On-Demand Publishing, Kentucky: 2018.)

I think you are right. The 1850 shows him living with his son, Joel P., age 80. I also question his marriage to Rachel, especially since no other record shows him as "Atkinson". Also, it is highly unlikely that they're first recorded son would be born 10 years after the marriage. So, who wants to bite the bullet and make the changes?
