Reverend Archibald Robert Afelskie Roman Catholic Priest of the Diocese of Pembroke Reverend Archibald Robert Afelskie died at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry's Bay on Monday, July 27th, 2009 at the age of 72. He is mourned by clergy, religious and faithful of the Diocese of Pembroke. Father Afelskie was the son of the late Roman Afelskie and the late Mary Lorbetskie. He is remembered by his sister Anne Filatore and his brother Benny and by his many nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Father was predeceased by his brothers, Frankie and baby James, and his sister, Teresa Swech. Father Afelskie was born in Killaloe on July 15, 1937 and educated in St. Andrew Separate Elementary and High Schools, Killaloe. Following further studies at St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto, Father Afelskie was ordained a priest by His Excellency, Most Reverend Willian J. Smith in St. Andrew Church, Killaloe on May 27, 1963. He served as assistant priest in the parishes of St. Martin of Tours, Whitney (1963), St. John Chrysostum, Arnprior and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Braeside (1963-1969), St. Alphonsus, Chapeau and its Missions of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Waltham, Holy Spirit, Nichabeau and Notre-Dame-du-lac, Desjardinsville (1969-1973), The Most Holy Name of Jesus, Pembroke (1971). He served as pastor of the parishes of St. Martin of Tours, Whitney and St. Matthew, Madawaska (1973-1985), Our Lady of Mercy, Bancroft and St. Anthony, Haliburton (1985-1987), St. Mary, Wilno (1993-1995). Father then retired from full-time parish ministry because of ill health. Throughout his active years, Father was Diocesan Chaplain of the C.W.L. for 5 years, Chaplain of Valley Manor, Barry's Bay until very recently, Chaplain of Madawaska Valley High School, Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6894. Father Afelskie will be waked at Zummach Funeral Home, in Killaloe, Tuesday, July 28th from 2:00 p.m., to 5:00 p.m., and from 6:00 p.m., to 9:00 p.m. The Solemn Rite of Reception, presided by His Excellency, Most Reverend Michael Mulhall, Bishop of Pembroke, will take place at St. Andrew Church, Killaloe on Wednesday, July 29th at 2:00 p.m., after which he will Lie in State until 9:00 p.m. Bishop Mulhall will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. The Rite of Committal will follow in the family plot at St. Andrew Cemetery. May he rest in peace. Arrangements have been entrusted to Zummach Funeral Home. Donations in memory of Fr. Afelskie can be made to St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Barry's Bay, Valley Manor, Barry's Bay, University of Ottawa Heart Institute or to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre.
