Charles was born on 5 Aug 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Oscar and Camille Affelder. His mother, Keegie, doted on him, and made sure he was sent to a presitgious school ( Shady Grove Academy) where, by his own account, he was miserable. He worked at KDKA in Pittsburgh, and developed a lifelong love of radio (N3AYU) and theater organs. He briefly attended Cornell University, but said he was not challenged and dropped out. He then worked for ATT in New York City, while rooming in New Jersey at the home of Arlene Davis Culbertson (Mary Arlene Davis' Aunt). Charles and Mary were married 20 Nov 1948, and they had two children, David Robert and Jessie Camille. Charles took a position with the Voice of America and moved the family to the Washington, DC area. Mary and Charles divorced in 1972, and he then married Edythe Marie Hahnenstein Gombas. His son, David, died while vacationing in Alaska in 1977. He passed away on 10 Jan 1994 while living with his daughter, Jessie, in Indiana.
