Biography

Leonard was born in 1856. He was the son of James Affleck and Priscilla Court. He was baptized in Trinity Methodist Church in Charlottetown on March 15 1856. [1]

He grew up in Lot 38, Kings County with his parents and brothers and sisters James, 23; Joseph, 15; Alfred, 14; Robert, 11; Ganeta, 18; Elizabeth, 9; Priscilla, 7 and Margaret, age2. He and his older brothers were farming with their father; the younger children were going to school. [2]

Leonard was living in Freetown, Prince Edward Island, when he married a widow, Catherine Jardine, in 1888. [3] Catherine was the daughter of Captain Thomas and Mary (Dunn) Lawless, whose first husband, Andrew Jardine, died in 1883, leaving his wife and 7 young children. [4]

In 1891, he was living with Catherine and her children in Freetown: Corrie, age 17; Belle, 15; William H, 14; Jane A., 12; Benjamin, 10; Ethel, 8 and Etta, 7, as well as their children, Sadie, 3; and James A., 1. The oldest son, Corrie, was listed as the farmer; no occupation was listed for Leonard. [5]

Leonard Affleck was a passenger on the steamer Florida that arrived in Charlottetown from Boston in August 1894. He might have gone to visit relatives, or to look for work in the States. [6]

By 1901, he was no longer living with Catherine. They had three children who were with their mother, Sadie, 13; Alfred, 11; and Florrie, 9. Sadie died in April 1904. [7]

Leonard died in August 1904 at age 48 in Head of Hillsboro. He had at least one brother and one sister living in Head of Hillsboro, and he might have been boarding with family. [8] [9]

Leonard was buried with his parents. [10]

"The death took place at the Head of Hillsboro on Thursday afternoon of Leonard Affleck after a short illness of two weeks from peritonitis. for a time bright hopes of his recovery were entertained but medical aid and friendly care were in vain. Deceased was a kind and obliging neighbor and was one much respected by those who knew him. He leaves to mourn a sorrowing wife, one son and daughter, who have the sympathy of their large circle of friends." [11]
